Determination by Anna Hoyler
There are many amazing things on our wonderful planet to watch: birds, sunsets, horses, water, fish, and thunderstorms, to name a few. A several months ago, I was able to add another thing to that list. It was after the last basketball game of the night,
I’d grabbed a friend and we were randomly shooting hoops and a six-year-old
started shooting hoops with us. It was totally amazing, watching her try again
and again, when she could barely get the ball to the hoop. But she kept trying,
and trying, over and over. She kept smiling no matter how many times she missed.
And then: “Mommy! I got one!” She’d hurry off to tell her Mom about it. It was
so cool, watching her try again and again. She’d try to steal my ball also, good
thing I’m way taller then her. But she’d try anyway, and once she hung off my
legs until she got bored. Then she’d be back to hoops, shooting more. Then she
got a second and was so delighted again! She’d rushed off to make sure her
mother knew about this wonderful event. The entire time I was watching she only
got two out of at least one hundred, but I hear she got two others at the
opposite end of the court. Poor girl was sweating something awful, but she was
happy. It must have been fun for her, just getting to try and try, then to
finally get it... Words cannot describe the feeling watching her awoke, but it
was there. If this story were to have a moral, I guess it would be to not let
failures discourage us, but rather keep trying until we succeed.
