One Step Closer
by Anna Hoyler
March 5, 2007
Dedicated to Kaula Crawford
You think you know who I am
You think you really see me.
But wait just a minute there, buster,
Hang on and you’ll really see.
Just look inside the deep dark shadows
Brush away the multi-stained curtains
Just take that one step closer, buster,
And you’ll really see.
Who I am
My secrets, both old and new,
The darkness, the light
My skeletons I wish no one knew,
Cruelty and kindness,
My fears, both common and rare,
Barbarism and civilization,
Buried deep inside me.
This is who I am;
Me.
Hidden where few will ever see:
The deep recesses of my soul.
But you never will, will you?
You wouldn’t dare to tread.
You see exactly what you want to, buster,
Thus you’ll never really see
Who I am
Me.
