 Our
Children's Department is staffed by specialists determined to provide a
friendly, enriching environment for young readers and pre-readers. In
addition to our large collection of books and other materials for all
children's age groups, regular
Story Times for toddlers & preschoolers and a weekly infant lap-sit,
we offer hundreds of programs each year that encourage reading and
promote the development of literacy skills.
 Today, literacy
also means computer literacy. We have six internet-enabled computers for
exclusive use by children age 12 and younger. These computers are content
filtered. At the Library or at home, children are encouraged to visit
The Kid's Corner for exciting games, homework help and links to
great websites.
 To
be truly effective, children's services must extend beyond the walls of
the Library building. Our Children's Outreach Specialist visits every
day-care and Head Start center in the Library Service Area - sometimes
accompanied by costumed members of the Mad Hatters Storytelling Troupe -
delivering the message that reading is fun, and encouraging Library use.
 In
the Children's Department, we do everything we can to promote the joy of
reading and learning. We tell stories, put on funny costumes ...
sometimes we sing and dance. Our children's Summer Reading Program draws
more attendees than does that of any other library our size in the State of New York.
Visit the
Children's Department to see what we are all about. A staff member will be happy
to assist you and your child. Children younger than nine must be
accompanied by an adult caregiver.

Library? A cool place to be? That’s crazy talk.
HOLD THE PHONE! It really
could be, no lie. We have access to a BIG SCREEN and a PROJECTOR (which means
movies like a movie theater, making video games larger than life size, or
cruising YouTube and watching stand up comedians or clips from America’s
Funniest Home videos), video games like DDR and GUITAR HERO, FOOD, SURROUND
SOUND, a POPCORN MACHINE...and of course books if that’s your style, duh. So
what’s the catch? Well, you just kinda have to come. So maybe you can say to your friends, “dude, I’m bored.” OR, all of you could just jaunt on
over this way to the library, do a little this, do a little that, eat a little somethin', and maybe even suggest some new things to do, who knows,
could be a trip.

Every Other Week Junk
 Torn Page Writers Group meets every other Thursday at
6:30 pm. Over Oreos and Root
Beer, the group displays a shared passion in creative writing. Members bring
pieces to read, or just show up and listen to others and give positive,
constructive feedback. All are welcome! In autumn 2006, the group introduced its own online
literary magazine,
Scattered Leaves, available to anyone with internet access.
A new volume, Scattered Leaves Vol. II, is online and growing. Email

Once-a-Month Junk
Teen Screen: Once every month there is a Saturday film at 12:30 pm geared
toward teens (all are welcome, with respect to the age restrictions) shown on a
big screen with surround sound. Also, popcorn and drinks are served! See the
"Events" calendar for details.
 Whether you are
researching a paper or looking for a car repair manual, the Reference Department
is a good place to start your search. Our staff
will assist you in using the library's computerized catalog and guide
you to appropriate resources to fit your needs. Many different
types of publications are available at the Reference Desk and in the
stacks, including dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanacs,
directories, atlases and bibliographies.

 In
our Local History Collection you can view: Histories of counties in New
York;
Corning-Painted Post City Directories from 1868 through the current year
(some years missing); Various early American war and immigrations

For nonprofit
groups and individuals seeking grants funding, the Library
has acquired Money Matters, located near the Reference Desk. Any member of the public seeking

have narrowed the approximate date of birth, marriage or death to within
a two-week span. We will try our best to

 Library Circulation
services have changed dramatically during the past two decades. For one,
bar codes and readers are now in use, speeding up the checkout process,
and fully-integrated circulation software enables automated
record-keeping on our computer network.
 Moreover, as times
change, the staff at the Circulation Desk takes on new jobs. Circulation
staff members help people find books and materials in other libraries,
including places outside the Southern Tier Library System (STLS). The
Circulation staff also handles lost books, overdue notices, “lost and
found,” scheduling of meeting rooms and, of course, sign-up for new
library cards.
Circulation staff
members handle many other tasks as well, including processing new library materials, rotating collections (with other STLS
libraries) and audio-visual maintenance. Circulation Staff and Volunteers oversee the shelving and physical
condition of the items housed at the Southeast Steuben County Library.
Circulation services include Technical Services: repair & maintenance of
books, CDs DVDs and other materials.

By using StarCat, the
Southern Tier Automated Regional Catalog, our patrons have access to books and
other materials in the collections of the 48 member libraries of the Southern
Tier library System (STLS). Use the "CATALOG" link at the top of any Web page on
this site to access StarCat. Place a "HOLD" on the items you want using your
13-digit Library card number and PIN. When the item(s) is ready to be picked up
here or at the member library you choose, you will be notified.
If the item is not listed in StarCat, perform a wider search using the WorldCat
search box in the right-hand column of any Web page on this site. Use WorldCat
to gather the information required to complete an Advanced Interlibrary Loan

We have
27 computers available for public use, 7 of which are located in the Children's
area and are strictly for use by patrons 12-years of age and younger.
The Children's computers are content filtered.
Not all programs are
installed on all computers, ask a Reference staff member if you are looking
for the location of a specific program.

of one hour per day for general usage. If you require more time for work,
school work or research, more time may be given if computers are available.

We offer WiFi usage
for your laptop FREE of charge! Bring your wireless capable laptop (802.11
b/g standards) and connect to the Internet from anywhere in the building.
The Library does
not offer a public wired (or cable-connection) hookup for laptops.
We do not have a
scanner for public use. We do have public CD burning capability.
We have a photocopy
machine available for public use. Copies are 20 cents per page; Black & White only. There is a one-time
minimum charge of $1.00 to purchase a refillable copy-card good for three copies (40 cents for
the card + three copies). Copies are letter or legal size. Original documents
may be enlarged or reduced in size.
Our Public Fax
service costs $1.00 per page. Please enquire at the Circulation Desk.

The Corning Leader - 1840
through December 2005. (The Leader no
longer microfilms its back issues. We have newsprint issues of The Leader
from 2006 to present date; however several months in 2006 were not saved, due to
lack of notice. From September 8, 2008 through present we maintain an electronic
archive of The Leader E-Edition, a digital version of the newspaper that
preserves all text and images and replicates newspaper formatting. The e-edition
archive is searchable.)

Steele Memorial Library keeps the Elmira Star Gazette on microfilm.
We have one

rooms available for public use. See the Circulation Department for information
& reservations.
The Laura Beer
Community Room is our larger room and can hold up to 100 people. This
room has audiovisual capabilities such as a theater-sized projection
screen, DVD & VCR, 36'' television set, wireless microphones and speakers
throughout the entire room. This room will be split into two smaller
rooms when needed.
Our Conference Room holds up to 15 people.
