Head of Children’s Services
The Board of Trustees of the David A. Howe Public Library in Wellsville, NY, is accepting applications for the position of Head of Children’s Services. The library seeks an energetic, innovative and forward-thinking candidate with a vision for 21st century library services for children, ages 12 and under.
The Head of Children’s Services will be responsible for:
Organizing, implementing and directing all operations of the Children’s Department
Creation, promotion and implementation of departmental programs and initiatives including story times, book discussions, summer reading programs, library tours and other specialized activities
Collection development including selection and purchase of books and media for the Children’s Department, and collection maintenance and evaluation
Supervising and training staff and volunteers assigned to Children’s Department
Assisting library patrons with service and information needs, including reference and readers advisory services
Community outreach including fostering connections with local school districts
Using media and technology to promote reading and learning
Managing departmental budget for collections, programs and supplies
Coordinating activities with other library departments
Bachelor’s degree; an MLS or MLIS Degree is preferred.
Experience working with children, preferably in a library environment, and knowledge of child development and age-appropriate activities
1+ years’ supervisory experience
Knowledge of children’s literature and other library resources for children, and of current trends in youth services
Ability to work independently and manage numerous diverse tasks
Strong technology skills, including Microsoft Office, social media and WordPress
Proficiency with Sirsi-Dynix circulation system software
Salary is $28,500-$32,500 for this full-time position, depending on experience. NYS Retirement and benefits are included.
The David A. Howe Public Library is the largest public library in Allegany County, and serves the beautiful Wellsville community area. It resides in the picturesque Appalachian Plateau, and is a scenic one hour drive from the Finger Lakes, Allegheny National Forest, Canada, Rochester, Buffalo and Corning/Elmira.
