Raising Readers: Summer--STLS and WSKG

Print version

This summer, STLS is partnering with WSKG (PBS TV and radio stations-based in the Binghamton area) to participate in Raising Readers: Summer, part of national effort to use the power of public media to help children ages 2 -8 improve their literacy skills.

Kids become readers by reading, by being engaged with words and letters, in books and other media as well as by sharing that experience with others, especially their parents and caregivers.  Raising Readers: Summer is a multi-platform event to celebrate learning throughout the summer. It includes 10 weeks of special on-air programming, online activities for kids and their parents or caregivers, a social media campaign and events right here in our area!

A special Raising Readers event will be held at the Southeast Steuben County Library, Corning on July 1 at 10:30 when CURIOUS GEORGE will visit the library. Interested? Call the library for more details! Can’t visit the library in Corning? Encourage literacy by engaging kids (as well as parents and caregivers) in fun activities by watch special themed programs on WSKG, visiting PBS KIDS (or, PBS Parents), checking out the RAISING READERS board on the STLS Youth Services Pinterest page, and sharing summer reading stories on the WSKG’s Facebook page.

Don’t forget, RAISING READERS is synonymous with public libraries! Your local public library is chock-a-block full of fun ways to engage your kids in words, in letters and in books! Remember, ANYTIME IS READING TIME1
