The Friday Follow-up: Staff Adjustment at STLS

Friday Follow-up:
a message from Brian M. Hildreth, STLS Executive Director
 Staff Adjustment at STLS

In recent weeks, STLS has proactively adapted to staff changes. Last month we learned Deputy Director Al Oliveras would move onto another library. It was bittersweet news.

Al has been a tremendous asset to our members since 2004.  For 13-years, he has assisted with many services including: website development, electronic resource training, 3-D printing, staff and public computer set-up, coordinated outreach and system-wide professional development.

It is always difficult to predict how long a professional can commit to one organization. This is especially true in libraries. It is clear Al made a lasting impression on our membership far into the future.

STLS also discovered Administrative Assistant Ella Chatlani will leave us this summer. For the last year Ella has pushed many special projects forward to enhance how STLS delivers service.

Ella was instrumental in coordinating our Spring CE, Plan of Service Focus Groups, Summer Trustee Training Workshop and Annual Meeting and Conference. These were four of our five major 2016 events.

Her responsibilities also assisted with board meeting administration, member library annual reports and successful grant writing. She managed every project with a smile while exceeding the needs of all STLS board members and staff.

Losing Al and Ella is significant. However, we should take comfort in new staff and assigned responsibilities.

To begin, STLS is pleased to announce Keturah Cappadonia has been appointed our new Outreach Consultant. Keturah joins STLS after working as a member librarian at the David A. Howe Public Library since 2015 and serving as library director for six years at the Coudersport Public Library in northern Pennsylvania.

Moving forward, Keturah will work with member libraries to assist with adult programming and build agency partnerships to enhance local library services. She will also lead system-wide coordinated outreach to connect member libraries with patrons most in need. Her position was created as a result of input from our member’s during last year’s focus groups.

Keturah comes to us with a wealth of rural library experience. Through her career, she has demonstrated successful leadership skills, grant writing experience, relationship building and a passion for public libraries. She also holds her Masters Degree in Library Science from the University of Pittsburgh and a Bachelors Degree in History from Mansfield University.

Keturah is a great fit for this position, and we are certain our members will absorb lasting benefits through her efforts!

Furthermore, Margo Gustina and Lorie Brown have been promoted within STLS.

Margo, who serves as our trustee development consultant will continue her work with member library boards. However, she now holds the administrative title of Deputy Director.  In this role, she will assist myself and the STLS board to carryout the administrative functions of the library system.

Many member library trustees and directors have come to appreciate Margo’s consultation on strategic and facilities planning, policy development, sustainable funding and intellectual freedom and social justice issues. She still wears this brand of service. But she will also take these strengths and apply them to system administrative work. We know she will do fantastic.

Lastly and equally important, Youth Services & ILL Consultant Lorie Brown has been promoted to Professional Development Manager. In this role, Lorie will continue her lifetime work of supporting member libraries to develop youth service programs. She will also coordinate out-of-system library material loan.

Yet, she will now work with STLS staff to coordinate system-wide professional development. This activity is critical to the health of a cooperative library system. Nearly 1/3 of STLS operations revolves around the education of members. We experienced a 16% increase in the number of member libraries participating in continuing education over the last 12 months, and a 50% increase over the last 2 years. Lorie assisted in this big accomplishment, and her efforts will shine moving forward.

Change is never easy. I tell our membership this all the time. But, change can and should be exciting. It all depends on mindset. STLS staff and trustees wish Al and Ella the very best. We know they will go on to do great things.  We are also embracing the arrival of Keturah and the new roles Margo and Lorie will play.

Have a great weekend, member libraries! I keep you in my endless thoughts and service.

Kindest Regards,

Brian Hildreth, Executive Director
Southern Tier Library System
