Library Director, Full Time

Wayland Free Library, Wayland

The Wayland Free Library is searching for a Director.  It is a thriving rural library in the Finger Lakes region of upstate NY and is centrally located between Rochester and Corning, NY. The Director manages a library with an annual budget of $190,000 and annual circulation of approximately 24,000 items.

Location:  Wayland, NY


  • Plan, organize, direct and responsible for the operations and activities of the library within the parameters of NYS law and the library’s policies.
  • Oversee and evaluate the development and execution of educational and cultural programs, collection development, supervision and development of staff & volunteers, and the care of the library’s facility and grounds.
  • Recommend policies and goals to the Library Board of Trustees
  • Be a positive and flexible individual who enjoys working with people of all ages and backgrounds, has outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, and will provide leadership as the administrative branch of the library’s governance.

Job Requirements:

  • An MLS or MLIS degree from an accredited graduate program with supervisory experience is preferred.
  • A Bachelor’s degree with supervisory experience in a related field will be considered.
  • Grant writing and technology skills are needed
  • Proven success in supervision, community outreach, and technology integration.

Employment Type

Full-time – 36 hours per week

This is a level 4 full time, exempt, non-professional position serving in a leadership role within the Division of Information Technology. The IT Procurement Specialist provides support to member libraries relative to all aspects and approaches of library technology operations, specifically IT systems design, procurement of library system and member library equipment, setup and maintenance of staff & public computers and the coordination of E-rate funding for system-wide Internet connections. Job Overview

The Library Director serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the library. They will manage library operations and supervise library staff. Prepare annual budget for the library in consultation with the board. Promote the mission of the library within the community. Attend meetings & training with the library board, Southern Tier Library System & Directors of Allegany County Library Association.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Daily correspondence ie. Emails & mail.
  • Attend board, STLS meetings & training.
  • Prepare annual budget and adhere to approved yearly budget.
  • Checking in & discharging of patron material – books, dvds.
  • Purchase of all library materials including books, dvds, cleaning supplies, office supplies.
  • Researching & acquiring funding thru grants, fundraising & donations.
  • Programming for adults, teens & children.

Reports To

The Library Director will report to the Library Board of Trustees.
