SEARCHING TOOLS

The best search strategy begins at the library. Library resources are available to you no matter where you are or what time it is. Go to the library without leaving home! All you need is a LIBRARY CARD! (Contact your local library to learn how to get one.)

STARCat

Try STARCat, the electronic catalog of public libraries in the Southern Tier. 

You can search anytime you'd like--even if your local library isn't open. And, if the books you need are owned at a library in another town, you can request that it be delivered to your local library! (You will need your library to request a book from another library.)

Electronic Resources

For up-to-date information on almost any subject, try these electronic resources. Encyclopedias and magazines are just a CLICK away! Try JUNIOR EDITION, SEARCHASAURUS and TOPIC SEARCH first. 

You will need to Log-in with your library card to use these resources. Have it handy!

Ask Jeeves for Kids!
The children's version of the famous search engine that allows users to ask real English questions and find sites with the answers. Includes a note to parents and help for teachers.

700+ sites for children and parents chosen by the Association of Library Service for Children, a division of the American Library Association. Sites are indexed by subject.  A very useful site for homework assistance.

KidsClick! Web Search
Created by a committee of librarians at the Ramapo Catskill Library System to help kids find valuable and age-appropriate web sites. The site includes many useful subject indexes to Internet resources and a kid-friendly Internet searching skills component.

OH! Kids
This directory of annotated resources for kids is arranged both by age group and subject. Includes fun places for homework breaks; and the heart of the site - the Subject Index - categorized by school assignment area. In addition, Resources contains recommended sites for Families, Home Schoolers, Librarians, Parents, and Teachers. From the Ohio Public Library Information Network (OPLIN).
