12:30 pm: Discovering Owney, the Mail-Pouch Pooch. This is a program centered around the children’s book, Owney, The Mail-Pouch Pooch, by Mona Kerby. Caregivers: Bring three valid postal addresses for each child in attendance. During the late 1800s, a stray dog was adopted by U.S. postal workers in Albany, New York. Owney traveled with mail pouches on railroad cars and became famous for guarding the U.S. mail, and for the many places he visited. 12:30 pm - 1:30: Moving Possibilities opening performance. "Moving Possibilities," a multi-arts exhibit featuring work from a dozen visual artists, will be on view at the Southeast Steuben County Library, 300 Nasser Civic Center Plaza, Corning, NY, from November 1, 2008 through December 12. The exhibit will open with a performance by improvisational performers Rhonda Morton and Peter Chwazik at 12:30 p.m., on November 1. Morton will move back and forth in the space for an hour, never moving the same way twice, while Chwazik improvises on the upright bass. The performance also features illustrated poetry broadsides, an audio component, and audience interaction.

We invite toddlers (and their designated adults) to Chicken Little Story Time on Tuesdays from 10:30 am to 11. This program resumes September 2, 2008 and continues through May 2009.

 

On Wednesdays, all preschool age children are invited to listen, sing-along and otherwise shine during Little Red Hen's Friends Story Time from 10:30 am to 11.

Nonprofit Training Workshops

If you are an employee or board member of a nonprofit organization, you may benefit from attending our autumn 2008 workshop series: The Nuts and Bolts of Building Your Nonprofit. This comprehensive series consists of eight classes led by experts, covering fund development, marketing, employee benefits packages, municipal grants, creating a non-profit organization, accountability trends, program evaluation and fund development research tools.

Co-sponsored by the Southeast Steuben County Library and the Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes, with assistance from Three Rivers Development Corporation, the morning and afternoon workshops will be held from September 23 through December 10 in Corning, NY. Thanks to the generous financial support of the Community Foundation, which has supplemented class costs, the fee for each session is minimal: $5.
