The Value of Making

This week, Lorie and I have been working on getting things together for a maker event, Making on a Dime, to be held at the Delevan-Yorkshire Public Library. Our efforts have included the purchase of materials, research, brainstorming and some tinkering. As I type this post, I am even printing an object on our 3D printer for the event. Sometimes I have to wonder if all this “maker stuff” is worth it. In the end, I must answer yes. Here are three reasons why:

  1. An opportunity for socialization and peer-to-peer learning – I recently attended a maker event with my children. It was a great opportunity to share and learn from others.
  2. Sparking innovation – This becomes quite evident when searching for activity ideas on the Internet. People will take an idea or concept and improve it or put there own spin on it.
  3. An opportunity to play – Play is important at any age. It provides us with the opportunity to try new things, fail and brainstorm possible solutions.

Why do you feel making is important (please share in the comments section of this post)?
