Overtime, I have come to learn advocacy cannot be taught. It is a process of continual participation spearheaded by those who choose to lead by example. STLS member libraries should be proud of the thirteen individuals who represented our communities this week in Albany. By now, all of you should know I consider these folks superheroes, and why I feel so strongly about their efforts.

During our journey, we met with Senator Catharine Young, Assemblymember Joseph Giglio, Assemblymember Phil Palmesano and Assemblymember Christopher Friend. We also met with aides from Senator O’Mara’s and Assemblymember Nojay’s offices.

Our talking points included, general State Library Aid, Construction Aid for member libraries, Central Library Aid for CCLD and specific legislative issues that impact Southern Tier libraries. Issues of particular importance involve possible revisions to New York State’s Tax Cap and Tax Freeze Legislation, and clarification on Special Legislative Districts.

I truly deem this year’s visit a success. First, this was the most member libraries’ representatives STLS has brought to Albany. Second, STLS’ Twitter posts were well-circulated throughout the NYLA and Library System communities on Wednesday. Lastly, STLS produced two Advocacy Day videos that were also well-distributed leading up to Wednesday’s events. Both videos received combined views of 271 (Thank you Margo Gustina and Filomena Jack!).

There is only one area that we need to work on next year. Unfortunately, only 12 people throughout STLS used my email link to contact Governor Cuomo regarding Library Aid. I understand contacting the Governor is an additional daily task, but considering thirteen people were willing to take an entire day to deliver this same message in person, I would have hoped for more email participants.

What happens next? Both the Senate and Assembly are working on language in the budget to counter the Governor’s proposed flat funding for libraries. We hope both legislative bodies will work to increase library support, and address our chief concerns. I dare say, “We just wait.”

In honor of Margo Gustina, Pauline Emery, Sarah Collins, Susan McGill, Alex Andrasik, Barb Radigan, Don Radigan, Ron Shaw, Cecily Hardy, Michelle LaVoie, Pat Silvernail and Ann Hayes, please take a moment to contact our Elected Officials and let them know funding for Southern Tier Libraries is more than important. It is necessary!

Have a fantastic week, STLS!

Warmest Regards,
